people involved in building and deploying
mobile products and services. With over
14,000 members it has had the objective of
being a catalyst for mobile business and
innovation.

Mobile Monday London has helped
members to keep abreast of continuing
and ever accelerating change by staging well over 100 topically themed events and by facilitating
knowledge exchange among members. It has provided a forum
for people from all disciplines in an environment where small and large
businesses feel equally at home, within which
fruitful partnerships form and where funding
and acquisitions take place.

At our regular events we often chose a
particular trend or development as the focus
of a discussion led by a diverse panel of
industry experts. The objective of these events
has been less for attendees to be talked at by the
experts and very much more for attendees
to participate in the discussion of the topic
in hand. There is very deep expertise in the
community and those with that expertise have been very willing to share it.

At other events we have held debates about topical subjects and have been proud to showcase early stage start-ups in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Mobile is now an established fact and the once heady dream of more people accessing the Internet via their phone than from a desktop has long passed. The journey has been incredibly exciting and enjoyable and it's been a pleasure to have worked with the community to facilitate so many things. However now it's time to take a break to consider what is next.

Do drop us a note to say hi, should you feel so moved.
Ivo Weevers , pictured in the middle above, is from Albert - the financial buddy for self-employed on their mobile. Their premise is that current finance and accounting tools are not designed with a mobile-first mindset at all - they are scary and incredibly hard-to-use. As result, millions of freelancers are still dealing with excel files, bags of receipts, and often are not on top of their finances. Albert solves this by making finances on a mobile extremely simple and accessible to everyone. It helps with invoicing, expenses and payments. His team are the people who also created the mobile apps for Natwest, RBS and the BBC Sports, and they are in the Wayra accelerator. Here is what he said about it: "...It was a great event for us: We made valuable connections for future events, with potential partners from the industry and some people trialling our app and it was great to meet the other startups too..."

Sean Redmond, CEO of Vertizan (pictured above) used the opportunity to launch his new Vitaq 3.0 App Test Automation tool. With test automation technology used in the high integrity software development world, Vitaq is typically used to verify API's in air traffic control, IoT network stacks and safety critical software in automotive applications. They use formal techniques (rules) to automatically create dynamic tests. Over the last year they have integrated this technology with App test frameworks like Appium, Calabash and RealVNC. Here is what he said about his experience

"...We were swept off our feet from moment the doors opened at Apps World. We demonstrated Vitaq connected with Appium to automatically test the Amazon App on a android mobile phone to over 50 groups of App developers. With our formal techniques based test description, Vitaq acts like a intelligent virtual user. It does everything to the App that a user would, accept that it never gets tired. Vitaq runs twenty four seven creating new test inputs pushing the App through its paces functionally testing and checking. It also monitors, measures and analyses the test coverage against defined use case scenarios. Using this highly automated approach, it is easy to compare the results of your app running on all popular devices.

We were delighted with the quality of the attendees. The buzz about our App test automation rippled through Apps world. The Gartner test automation analyst came to see us, having heard from others about this new highly automated approach to testing Apps. We had App developers from big companies like American Express, Marks & Spencer and Travelex. We had many indie developers drop by. We even had security experts who were looking for new ways to do vulnerability (PEN) testing of Apps, which Vitaq is very capable of doing. We learnt an enormous amount in the two days and are now ready to exploit this fabulous opportunity..."

Chris Michael joined The (first) Mobile Academy in 2012 and has been an active member of the community ever since - giving advice to later cohorts and taking the stage at Mobile Monday Demo Nights. We are really excited to let you know that he has now secured funding for Swytch from Neil Hutchinson (Neon Adventures), Yannick Roux (EC1 Capital), James Hilton (CEO of M&C Saatchi Mobile) amongst others with the service launching in October 2015.

He recounts his experience from winning a stand in our Village at Apps World last year:

“…Over the two days at Apps World we were able to showcase a very early version of the Swytch app to hundreds of people and get their feedback on the service. This was invaluable to us as we were getting first hand contact with potential users at a time where we could take action and build a service that users really wanted. We did get some press exposure too as an interesting upcoming service…”

Scramboo, told us about two of their favourite conversations: "I met a major English football club that are very interested in the product and someone on the first day refused to tell us their identity but later I later received a LinkedIn invite from them - turns out they were very senior in a large corporate...it was very worthwhile"

Gary McDonagh came to The Mobile Academy in 2014 and has told us what a great experience it was for him too and his Startup “Double” http://www.joindouble.com/. He met journalist Eric Auchard, chief tech correspondent for EMEA at Reuters who wrote about them here: http://reut.rs/1isIykW. He also met the Incubus London team and got on to their pre-accelerator programme as well as Microsoft Ventures where they got to the final.

Topics include how to build successful teams, HTML5 vs Native, adopting lean practices, how to work with developers, how to market your mobile app and understanding the latest market opportunities - and by the way we specifically do not teach how to code!
Around half of these were in the current intake or alumni of The Mobile Academy (the course we host with UCL).

Armed with my dictaphone, I interviewed our startups and they all talked about the diverse range of people that they met over the two days including web developers, investors, universities, corporates, press and bloggers. There was also mention of lots of different sectors; such as music and fashion.

Douglas Robb of Scramboo, talked about two of his favourite conversations: "I met a major English football club that are very interested in the product and someone yesterday refused to tell me their identity but this morning I received a LinkedIn invite from them - turns out they were very senior in a large corporate...it was very worthwhile"

Of course, it was also a great opportunity for some of the startups to engage with end customers too: 5 Tiles (Jose and Michal pictured here), were testing out the usability of their new keyboard for small devices on a Samsung smartwatch. They were delighted how quickly people were able to grasp their new interface. They also found a whole new target group where their product was providing a great solution for those with reduced dexterity.

Frederick of Adsy (love their branding!) also said that he had met quite a few of their 23,000 users and it was great to get feedback, confirmation of customer need and find out about ways they were using the product.

Albert at Quiztix added how useful it was to meet other startups and celebrate how far the word of Apps have come along. His team members enjoyed the opportunity to meet customers face to face.

From our side, we had many of our friends from international Mobile Monday chapters pop along to see us - here we have (left to right) London, London, Singapore, Tel Aviv and Singapore!

We also had a great opportunity to take a ride on the new cable car over from ExCeL to the after party at the 02. For me, the whole experience reinforced how lucky we are to live in such a diverse and vibrant city - a hot bed of innovation that pulls people from all over the world.

Well done to the startups and thanks to those of you that came down over the two days to support them.

Contribute to the Developer Economics Research Series on The App Economy and Developer Trends

While we’re here, and talking about Apps, we’re great supporters of the Developer Economics survey, which provides really important insights into what is happening and needs your support!

Now in its eighth iteration, the survey tracks responses from thousands of contributors across the globe. What do you think about the latest trends? Do you see more opportunity in Wearables, Smart Homes or Connected Cars? Who's making money from apps - and how? Are iOS developers adopting Swift? Is the web vs. native debate still relevant? It only takes ten minutes and you could win some great prizes.

We will send out a link to the free results of the survey in February. So do get involved here.
“…the Mobile Monday audience has incredible amount of knowledge and expertise in the mobile industry. We received feedback about the product as well as our business model. Shortly after our demo we managed to find our first investor, a mobile industry legend - Christian Lindholm. We will be presenting the new version of our product at the end of this week – based on the feedback that we received here after our demo. Mobile Monday London, its organisers as well as the audience, have played an important part in our journey …” Michał Kubacki
10 Startups Demo Innovative Approaches to Mobile Life: Mobile Monday London Demo Night, September 2014

Ten hot ticket startups took to the stage to show us what they are made of at Mobile Monday London’s Demo Night (16 September) during Informa’s 10th Annual Service Delivery Innovation Summit at Thistle Hotel, Marble Arch. Greeted by an enthusiastic audience, they showed clever innovations for our mobile lives.

“There were some great case studies on service innovations, operators and carriers.” Richard Behrendt

Karel Bourgois said: “I’ve come all the way from Paris, I go to Mobile Monday in France, and have also attended San Francisco. I like the structure of this London Mobile Monday event – it's very well organised and I have discovered lots of innovative startups. I enjoyed the audience participation.”

Daniel Balfour of Mobivate (previously worked for Virgin Mobile) said: “This is my first time in London - I have been to Mobile Monday in Sydney and really liked how there was a good amount of time for networking tonight”

Dippen Lad of Sky said: “I used to work for a WiFi start-up called The Cloud, and I’m a regular at Mobile Monday – I attend these events so that I can get ideas and understand what’s happening in the startup world. My favourite tonight has to be Pronto, I can see it taking off.”

A shout out to the demoers:

Matt gets feedback over a nice glass of red!

Matt Wadsworth represented Good Food Talks - this startup prides itself on the fact that it has developed a Web app that’s “the smart way to read a menu”. Designed for blind or visually impaired people, Good Food Talks allows restaurants to use the service so their menus can be accessed using the device's assistive technology. The app is available for download for all iOS & Android devices.

Swytch
Once you realise what Swytch does, you’ll know why the audience loved this startup, represented by CEO Chris Michael. Swytch addresses a big pain point for consumers by enabling you to manage multiple numbers from one device. Step in Swytch to change your life, as you won’t need to stuff your pockets with mobile phones anymore!

QuizTix
Ian Masters & Albert Marshall showed us their app for quiz lovers. QuizTix is a group of original, fun and accessible quiz games that offer a familiar and friendly entertainment experience.

Mylo
Martin Sandstrom & Mark Lee showed us how the App helps you to manage all your bills and expenses in your houseshare, splitting everything and showing what you owe each other.

Grabyo
Benjamin Bourdin of Grabyo demonstrated their real time video platform that offers broadcasters the opportunity to share video clips from live broadcast TV and video feeds across Twitter, Facebook, the web and mobile. They already have some very large clients under their belt.

Viewmaker
Douglas Robb showed us his cloud based augmented reality platform where, with no programming skills, you can publish your own custom apps, converting your location-based data into AR-ready content, adding your own styling and extra widgets as you go.

Pronto
James Roy Poulter whet our appetite with his foodie App. Pronto allows users to order & track their meals 24/7. All it takes is 3 little taps from a smart device, and BOOM, your food is ordered!

Adsy
Frederick Tubiermont demoed how easy Adsy (a mobile web app that lets you create mobile web apps) was to create a mobile web app using tonight’s Mobile Monday event as the subject matter. He showed how to add maps, links, visuals and more using his simple user interface.

IFS
Matthew Bridge demonstrated how wearable technology, such as the Samsung Gear 2 smartwatch - can improve workforce efficiencies through the delivery of business critical information. Using Samsung’s API’s for notification alerts, they had connected components of their Enterprise System – allowing alerts to be sent out when events changed or statuses updated.

Matthew told us that the feedback he received was very positive reinforcing their belief that in today’s environment emails are no longer really used for their intended purpose, such as important information delivery – and an alternative approach is required. He also told us that the audience Q&A provided an excellent forum for discussion and constructive critiquing.

OpenTRV
Mark Hill and Damon Hart-Davis represented OpenTRV – a smart radiator device that takes full control of the household boiler and its sensors. They even brought along bits of radiator to help tell the story!
In case you didn't spot the news, our wonderful annual sponsors Google Cloud Platform have been shaking up the cloud industry with numerous announcements - including a promise to "re-introduce Moore's Law" to cloud computing. So this seems like a very good time for us to review what's going on in the land of cloud and take a broad look at the whole topic, from the perspective "So you have the cloud - now what are to going to do with it?".

I expect us to cover a lot of ground. We'll think about the symbiotic relationship between Internet of Things and cloud services, we'll marvel at the ever increasing quantities of data that need storage and processing, we will be concerned at the somewhat topical discussions about centralisation of data making it easier for certain organisations to gain access to that data. In addition I think there's scope for a wide ranging discussion of how readily available and cost effective cloud solutions broaden the scope of what cloud means to mobile - beyond persistence of data and offloading processing ... including asking whether cloud services are sufficiently advanced today simply to buy back-end services "by the API" allowing you just to develop the font-end.

The exact topics for discussion will of course, as usual, be driven by you, the lively and highly participatory community.

I can think of no better person to lead this discussion (that's why I asked her to do so) than Camille Mendler, @cmendler, who is Principal Analyst at Informa and whose speciality is, well, exactly this area. Camille has kindly chaired MoMoLo events in the past and I have no doubt will keep the discussion lively and fast paced!

Camille will be joined by our expert panel each of whom speaks from a different perspective on this broad subject:

Rob Easton, @Cloud_Easton, Head of Google Cloud Platform, UK&I, our host, speaks from the Cloud Service Provider Perspective

Jonathan Raper, @MadProf, CEO at Placr, and Visiting Professor at City University speaks from a Big Data Perspective

Here's Simon's take on the evening.

Accelerators, Finance and Good advice

Mobile Monday London held a fascinating event on Monday February 17. Titled Acceleration and Finance, the team put together a great panel representing accelerators, VCs, entrepreneurs and Nesta (see below for the full list)

Now when you mention money to the mobile community, you get their attention and the event at Centre Point was packed.

The chair John Spindler kicked off with a whirlwind look at the overall VC and accelerator space, and a blizzard of stats and links to resources and more information. Even with 40 slides in 10 minutes, he got a lot about the shape of the market over, making the point there is no shortage of people / organisations that want to help. His full deck is here and deserves some close reading.

John Spindler's Presentation

The key point we took away was that across the US there are around 69,000 seed fundings on $100k each year. In the UK last year there was probably only around 1,500. So there is a way to go yet.

Next up Jessica Stacey from Nesta took us on a little less frenetic tour of the ecology, summarising the accelerator space and drawing upon some of the research Nesta has done in the space. Again a clear message that there is no shortage of resources.

She had a neat summary that we liked, suggesting there are essentially three types of accelerator - ecosystem, matchmaker and investor. Again Jessica has shared her slides and they are well worth a read.

Jessica Stacey's Presentation

We then moved to the panel and this session opened with each of the panellists introducing themselves and their organisation.

Jon Bradford of Techstars went first and whilst the Techstars model is pretty well understood he also talked about their partnerships with corporates and how important he thought that was. They are currently doing programmes with Barclays and Disney, whilst there is no investment a clear focus on the appropriate vertical is ideal for some start ups.

Building on the corporate venturing theme Simon Devonshire of Telefonica's Wayra went next. With bases in numerous cities the Wayra initiative is proving a success in terms of number of applicants and the progress of the teams accepted.

Rather newer is the Microsoft accelerator and Diane Perlman spoke about their experience in other markets and their ambitions for the new programmes across Europe. Jon Bradford suggested – tongue in cheek - that they had stolen the idea after Techstars ran a programme for Microsoft.

Both Simon and Diane were at pains to point out that teams were not locked into the sponsoring corporate; Simon said they would and had facilitated deals with Vodafone etc. and Diane stressed that the teams on the Microsoft programme could build on any tech platform they liked – although clearly links with xBox were a huge advantage for gaming start ups.

But what is it like for an entrepreneur? The next panelist was Brian Taylor who has a start up called PixelPin and is currently navigating the world of accelerators and funding. He talked about the benefits of grants and match funding but emphasised the need for persistence – a point that kept coming up. His view on the key advantage of accelerator programmes? The connections that they open up – he mentioned that he has met 10 banks in then last few weeks – something that would have taken years without the contacts of his accelerator.

Last up was Simon Cook of DFJ Esprirt – the European arm of legendary valley VC Draper Fisher. The track record of both the US and Europe is amazing and he talked from the viewpoint of later stage investing. He thinks the key role of accelerators is to teach entrepreneurship – giving people the skills to build a business.

His general view probably resonated most with us – he believes there is too much focus in fundraising as a measure of success; there are 10 million SMEs across Europe that people have started and made a success of – compelling evidence of entrepreneurship.

All the panellists spoke of the intense competition to get into their programmes and when asked what were the factors that differentiated the chosen few there was some consensus; it’s all about the team. Jon put it best when he shared his 5 criteria for selecting someone into Techstars:

Team, Team, Team, Opportunity & Team

The questions dug a little deeper into these issues and Simon Cook made an interesting point – despite the rapid expansion of accelerators and the buzz around start ups the actual number of a Series A funding has stayed really constant at around 1,000.

The best advice from the panel? Probably Jon's advice to find the 3 smartest people you know and go buy them a coffee and ask them to tear your idea apart. Then ask them to suggest another 3 people to do the same with. This way you quickly start to find the issues you need to address.

And Simon Cook ended by pointing out that even the biggest successes gave been through tough times. He talked of board meetings where it was feared the next salaries could not be paid – yet these companies had gone on to huge success.

Our take is that too many people focus on the quick win of an accelerator place and funding. The reality is that these are lottery wins – great when they happen, but not something to rely on.

Smart entrepreneurs get their team right and build a business around solving a problem. Getting people to pay for your solution validates your idea and demonstrates you have the grit and persistence to make a success of your business. And that story could well open the doors to the accelerators and the funding.

Good luck.
A super star line up for our next event which is the latest chapter in our long running series on Finance for Start-Ups and once again we are working with our event partner ICT KTN.

The focus of this event is accelerators. There are lots of them, there will soon be more. The questions: "What does it take to get on an Acceleration programme?" and "How much do investors value them?" will undoubtedly be among the topics of discussion.

Once again the inimitable John Spindler, CEO of Capital Enterprise (@CapEnt), will be in the chair. Before we get into the discussion, John will be giving us an updated lightning tour of funding options and Jessica Stacey from NESTA will be giving us some insights into NESTA's research into acceleration. For a flavour of the event, check out last year's event roundup.

Joining John on the panel:

Jessica Stacey - @JessStacey - Programme and Research Manager, Accelerators and Early Stage Businesses, NESTA

Jessica has been working on an update to NESTA's report on start-up acceleration and will be sharing some of their conclusions.

Simon Cook - @venturejedi, CEO and Co-founder DFJ Esprit

DFJ Esprit are leading VC investors on the London scene. Simon, who has been described by Esquire as "A rock 'n' roll figure with a blonde faux-hawk and some billion-dollar swagger" will hopefully share with us what they look for and how they view acceleration.

Brian Taylor - @Brian_PixelPin, CEO & Inventor PixelPin

PixelPin goes from strength to strength - a graduate from the Wayra London Academy, PixelPin has now gone on the the Fintech Innovation Lab and has interesting stories to tell about raising finance on the way. Not to mention that we're proud that Brian is a graduate of The Mobile Academy.

Diane Perlman - @Diane_Perlman, Microsoft Ventures, Start-ups Lead

Microsoft's own London acceleration programme has just started at Central Working. Diane will undoubtedly have lots of say about selection of candidates and differentiation of programmes.

Simon Devonshire - @simondevonshire, Director, Wayra Europe (Telefonica)

Simon has been responsible for setting up Wayra Academies across Europe, you might call him a serial accelerator creator. He's certainly in a good position to comment on the value created.

Jon Bradford - @jd, MD, Techstars London

To say that Jon has been on the inside track of the start-up, acceleration and investment scene here in the UK and else where would be to miss the point. Jon has promised that his contribution will be "fun and lively" ...

All in all a fabulous line-up!
Thanks as always to our wonderful volunteers and to Stefan Stefansson for taking the photos you can see below.

All 11 companies spent 3 minutes pitching followed by 4 minutes of questions from judges and audience. The audience then piled out for a lovely buffet and a few drinks while the judges returned their verdict - which they took all of their allotted 45 minutes to reach - must have been some tough choices to make. Many thanks to the audience for helping with the decision making through completion of the questionnaire - we can reveal that the judges found this very useful.

The most frequently asked judges' questions were "Who do you want to meet there?" and "What are you going to show?" - top tip for future competition entrants.

All in all a very strong field indeed. Many congratulations to the winners.

What follows is a short summary of each of the contenders ... there were some highly entertaining performances from the presenters. Among other things, we're thinking "cool" and "awesome" here, and if you were there you'll know specifically what we mean!
